At Bayleys Marlborough we’re delighted to include Kaikoura, under our real estate umbrella. It’s no secret that this very special coastal town in New Zealand has faced a few challenges since the devastating 2016 earthquake struck in 2016. But the resilient Kaikoura community has pulled together over the past fifteen months, and with the North Road now open, and a new container hub in place as a central spot for retail and relaxing, the town is most definitely back on its feet.
We caught up with Bayleys Marlborough agent, Melanie Campbell to find out exactly why Kaikoura is the perfect place to work, rest and play!
- Q: What is the number 1 best thing about living and working in Kaikoura at this time of year?
Melanie says: This is a lovely time of year in Kaikoura, the weather is hot! The town is bustling with overseas travellers, retail and hospitality businesses are thriving with visitors spending time and money in the town. We love visitors, and they always receive a warm Kaikoura welcome!
- Q: What are your favourite activities in Kaikoura in late summer and early autumn?
Melanie says: Biking and diving! The warm late summer evenings mean there is more time to enjoy the outside hobbies I love.
- Q: What’s the best local, seasonal produce to enjoy at this time of year.
Melanie says: Kaikoura businesses produce fabulous local cheeses and there’s always a good supply of fresh fish. This time of year it’s fun to catch your dinner, go surf casting off the beach or head out in a boat!
- Q: If a visitor had just 24 hours in Kaikoura, what would be your must-see or must-do recommendations?
Melanie says: I’d definitely recommend whale watching, or a dolphin or seal swim. Kaikoura is a world-renowned destination for these activities, and we are so lucky to have them on our doorstep. My absolute must-see would be a walk up to the lookout from the seal colony; the views are breathtaking. When you’ve earned your supper with the uphill walk visit one of Kaikoura’s fabulous local restaurants to enjoy some delicious Crayfish.
- Q: If somebody had just moved to Kaikoura, what would be your must-see or must-do recommendations?
Melanie says: Take a drive up the coast and look at all of the work that has been carried out to get this wonderful town back on the grid. It’s incredible to see the scale of work and manpower that has made it possible, and it illustrates very nicely the type of community spirit you’re going to enjoy as a resident.
- Q: What advice would you give to anybody looking to make Kaikoura their home?
Melanie says: Talk to somebody who knows the area well, so they can help you find the perfect spot. I have lived in Kaikoura since high school, and am proud to call it home.
