Around the world, smart homes are becoming ever more popular. Similarly, more and more New Zealanders are choosing to use some form of automation technology to control home heating, lighting, or security.
In time, this technology will be considered the norm. And buyers will come to expect a certain level of home automation. In this week’s blog, we’re going to take a look at a few simple ways that property owners are turning their houses into smart homes.
Don’t confuse a digital entry keypad with a smart lock. These locks work by using your smartphone to control your lock via an app. Functionality will usually include unlocking your door on approach. And most will allow you to grant access to family, friends, guests and tradespeople when you’re not home by simply texting them a code. Castle Locksmiths, (who, as you can imagine know a thing or two about home security), recommend the August keyless entry system, which works across multiple platforms, including Apple, Amazon Echo & Alexa and Google Home.
Philips Hue is undoubtedly the market leader here. The system is easy to install, and the LED bulbs come in a full-colour spectrum, so you can create a range of lighting scenes, to match your mood! You can control the lighting from your smartphone, so if you’re travelling it’s easy to turn lights on and off to make it look like somebody is home. Philips Hue is available at Noel Leeming.
Connected appliances are on the up, from smart refrigerators and ovens to washing machines and clothes dryers, right through to window dressings and blinds. All provide remote monitoring and operation via your smartphone. The Samsung Family Hub refrigerator allows you to manage your food and family communications, get information and entertainment, promising to make your kitchen the true hub of your home. Of course, it’s worth remembering that smart homes need connectivity. Fast broadband and good cellular coverage can often be a big drawcard for buyers. So, if you have superfast broadband or have adapted your home with smart technology to increase your Wifi signal make sure our agents know about it!
