Spare Rooms – Making the most of yours!

January 14, 2020 by kate

Happy New Year to you all! We hope you have had a wonderful festive season. Is 2020 the year you’re planning to sell, buy or carry out some home improvements? Whatever your real estate goals are for the year ahead, Bayleys Marlborough is here to help you. We love to bring you selling and buying tips on this blog. As well as ideas on how to enjoy the homes you live in. Over the recent holidays has your spare room been the base for visiting family and friends? If so, it may be time to regain a little space for yourself. January 25th is ‘A Room Of One’s Own Day.’ Yes, it’s a thing!

This celebratory day’s original inspiration most likely came from Virginia Woolf’s 1928 essay, ‘A Room Of One’s Own’, where the author heartily asserted that to write successfully, one needs a room of one’s own. But fast-forward 92 years, and we’re going to share a few ideas of how you can update your spare room for 2020, making it a room of your own, while still accommodating the guests!

Four ways to make your spare room a useable space:

Working from Home:

If 2020 is the year you’ve decided to step back from the daily commute, then turn your spare room into a home office. We love the executive styling of this sofa bed from TreasureBox. Perfect for meeting clients, it doubles up as a bed when you have guests to stay.

Room to Relax:

If you have no intention of bringing work home with you but want a separate space where you can get away from the family or TV noise, then create a reading room. A comfy armchair for one is just the ticket if you’re going solo in this space. If you’re conscious that you might need to utilise the spare room for sleeping when a visitor arrives, then choose the Zak Single Sofa Bed Chair from Danske Mobler.

Working Out but Staying In:

If 2020 was your year to get fit then remove the hurdle of finding time to get to the gym and work out at home. Installing a home gym doesn’t mean giving up your spare room in its entirety; just be sure to choose compact equipment. Invest in foldable/slimline treadmills and free weights that pack into carrying cases when not in use. If you want to invest more in equipment, but still want to offer your guests a place to stay, then check out Tiltaway Wall Beds.

A Family Room:

If the family is growing, then why not make your spare room a rumpus room. We love these large floor cushions from Lujo. They can be used inside and outside, they’re perfect for a rumpus room and teenage friends will be happy to sleepover on them!

Finally, don’t forget that a spare room that doubles up as useable space can be a much sought-after by prospective buyers. Contact us for a free property appraisal if you’re thinking of listing.
